WASHINGTON – Holly Harris, Executive Director of the Justice Action Network, the country’s largest advocacy organization supporting criminal justice reform, issued the following statement on the dismissal of acting Board of Prisons Director Hugh Hurwitz:

“We are cautiously optimistic about the long overdue changes at the Bureau of Prisons, but it shouldn’t have taken the death of a high profile billionaire in a salacious case to bring us to this moment,” said Holly Harris, Executive Director of Justice Action Network. “We have been calling for real oversight and accountability at BOP for some time in order to oversee proper implementation of historic prison and sentencing reform legislation that passed last year, address deplorable prison conditions, and ensure recidivism-reduction programming is put in place to prioritize public safety.”

Harris continues: “We urge the powers that be to look to the states for justice systems that promote rehabilitation and public safety. We hope systemic changes are on the horizon at the Department of Justice, which has been acting as a fourth branch of government for far too long.”
