Washington, D.C. – The Justice Action Network, the largest bipartisan organization working to reform the justice system in Congress and across the country, issued the following statement following President Donald Trump’s call for justice reforms in his first State of the Union address:
“This is the moment. There is no more cause to delay moving a criminal justice reform bill to the President’s desk,” said Holly Harris, Executive Director of the Justice Action Network. “The President used the world’s grandest political stage to tell millions of Americans that opportunity should be extended to everyone, including those in our prisons. Legislation with broad, bipartisan support — that has passed in dozens of states across the country — is ready for lawmakers to move through committee and pass through Congress. And the even better news is our recent polling found nearly 9 in 10 Americans strongly support these same criminal justice reforms.
“The President made second chances a top priority. The American people have issued a mandate. And now the message to Congress is clear: It’s time to roll up our sleeves and work together to finally pass proven solutions to our justice system’s greatest challenges.”
