“IT’S A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!”

ATTORNEY GENERAL MERRICK GARLAND ANNOUNCES THAT PEOPLE ON HOME CONFINEMENT WILL NOT BE FORCED TO RETURN TO PRISON

DECISION IMPACTS THOUSANDS OF MEN AND WOMEN

(Washington, DC) –Attorney General Merrick Garland announced today that the Department of Justice will issue new guidance clarifying that people on home confinement will not be forced to return to prison at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s a Christmas miracle!” said Holly Harris, President and Executive Director of the Justice Action Network. “I was thrilled to be informed by Attorney General Garland, and to thank him for giving these families such an incredible gift. This is an amazing moment for all of the men and women who shared their stories and the advocates who spent the last ten months pushing for this policy change.”

The policy change came after groups from the left, right and center met with Biden Administration officials urging them to allow people to complete their sentences at home. The meeting, on November 30, included representatives from the Justice Action Network, FAMM, ACLU, Americans for Tax Reform, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, R Street, and the Sentencing Project, and the Justice Roundtable.
