JUSTICE ACTION NETWORK STATEMENT ON THE RESIGNATION OF BOP DIRECTOR MICHAEL CARVAJAL

Washington, D.C.—Today, Michael Carvajal, Director of the Bureau of Prisons, announced his resignation. The decision came after Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) called for his firing, and in the wake of reporting on multiple crises within the department, including serious misconduct by employees and a failure to implement major reforms required under the First Step Act.

In response, Justice Action Network Federal Director Inimai Chettiar released the following statement:

“From allowing coronavirus to spread unchecked through prisons, to tolerating serious misconduct within the department, to refusing to comply with mandated reforms, Director Carvajal’s tenure was more than disappointing. We were grateful to see the Biden Administration take action on the home confinement crisis and work to keep families together. We are hopeful the administration will appoint a new Bureau of Prisons director who exemplifies values consistent with the bipartisan criminal justice reform movement.”
